Parker's Variant Versus Merkur's Progress. Which is better?
Value for Money - 9/10. While these cost an extra $20 (ยฃ15) more than say a Merkur 34c, it comes with more functions, and more craftsmanship has to be put into these. At around $62 (ยฃ45) it's a good buy and worth the bit of extra investment if the adjustments are required. Merkur Progress 570 - Worth a quick mention is the 570 model.

The Variant copies the head geometry of the Merkur Progress, which is an outstanding (if ugly) razor. Parker fixes the ugly part, but then blows it with poor QC. IMO the best adjustable razor on the planet is the Gillette Slim. No, they haven't been produced in nearly 50 years, but they were so popular in the 1960s that plenty have survived.

Though they cost roughly the same, the double edge razor offers multiple design improvements including a knurled and longer handle for improved grip and handling. The Variant has a slightly longer handle and it has more heft making it feel more balanced than then Progress. The plastic turn nob of the Progress feels more flimsy than the Variant turn nob which is metal. Overall, my preference is definitely the Parker Variant. Last edited: Jul 30, 2020.
